I'll probably get flamed all to heck for this, but it wouldn't be the first time I opened my mouth and pissed people off.

Am I the only person finding it more and more difficult/daunting to give anything but trivial "Beautiful!" "I love it!!" "Wonderful!" "Perfect!!" comments on work? Over the last month or so, it's becoming more and more common to see artists say they don't want people pointing out what they see as flaws or things that are off. They want constructive crits, but they get upset when the crit is of a certain type such as "That part looks a bit out of place or jarring, or the nose seems crooked etc." I thought that was what critiquing was about? :o Art is subjective of course and no piece of art is going to appeal to everyone and someone will always find something about a piece that doesn't quite look right. It might be true flaw, or it might be simply perception/personal pref. But it's seeming more and more common that you can't express anything for fear of offending the artist unknowingly. Normally, if the eyes of a character are too close together, that's considered a flaw in proportions. Ditto if the arms are too short/too long or the head too large/small. To give a good critique, wouldn't you question those, at least asking if that was intentional as part of the piece? Maybe the artist didn't notice, or maybe they did but couldn't quite fix it, or put their finger on what the problem was. Maybe those flaws are intentional and part of the artist's style... But how can any commentor know without asking?

So, if pointing out things like the above are unacceptable, then what exactly IS a critique to help the artist improve? I honestly dont' think there is anything you can say... No artist is perfect, not even the top ones at dA. Ask any artist that has had work rejected by Epilogue for having too many flaws...

Now I'm all paranoid about offending an artist. I can't keep up with all the individual comment preferences of all the artists I watch. :o

Ah well.. so how is everyone's weekend going so far? :)

 Oh I so agree with you!

Don't ever worry about offending me at least...I really value a good critique! I'm of the personal belief that if you can't take some constructive criticism (key word constructive) then you probably shouldn't be displaying your art, or you should select the option that you don't want critiques when you post! I keep running into this in my classes (I'm studying animation)...that especially is a place where people should be able to take constructive criticism! It's all about learning and improving isn't it? It's so true that every artist out there has room for improvement!

Kudos to you Mydian

Well I avoid critiquing when it says not to. Instead what I really like about the piece. I get real specific, just like a real critique. I say it's beautiful and then why I think so.

Like the piece has really good hair or jewelry, I say so. Also if there are more than one person in the pic I always say who is my favorite and why, be it their expression clothes and so on.

If the pic is bad (in my opinion) but doesn't allow critique, I say it's cool, either way I'm real short and to the point (of course I do this when I have too many Devs too. :giggle: )

When critique is allowed, if I find anything wrong. I'm VERY SPECIFIC! If the nose is off...I don't say somehow, I GIVE EXACTING details. The left nostril is too wide, the nose is crooked because on that face shape, with that kind of nose would give it a crooked feel.

It is all in how you word and present the critique too. Use words that sound suggesting and not demanding. If the critique looks demanding by itself use conversation to soften the blow. Say what you LIKE about the piece first or share an experience you had with your own work you weren't comfortable with.

If a critique looks pushy it probably is and that's how a critique can rub artist's the wrong way.

Also if you know a way to fix what is wrong with the piece, offer your advice on how to do so.

A rule of courtesy: if none of the above can be done without sounding mean, do it by note, don't do it in public where EVERYONE can see it, because it really is rude.

In summary: Always try to be polite when offering criticism and make sure to get your intention across of why something should be fixed and how to fix it. If you can't supply offers on these three things, 1. Your purpose for the crit 2. Why it should be fixed. 3. How it can be fixed, don't give a crit as it won't really be helpful for the artist to improve.

If after all this the artist is still snippy:
1. Stop watching them
or
2. Stop commenting all together.

I understand what you mean! ^^
& I agree, why ask for someone to criticise your work, if you can't handle it?
You are right on about all of this! Even when someone critiques my work in a very critical way, I always try and take it as advice or help. Sometimes it can be painful but I always try to see the sage advice in it, which is always there. Besides, different artists notice different things so there might be some helpful things that someone saw that the artists who created it didn't see during the time of creation!

I hope your weekend is going well! I'm working so that explains how mine is going LOL  hope you're doing well!

Constructive criticism is all about showing an artist ways s/he can improve, it's not about being spiteful, or anything, it's supposed to HELP an artist. I too think it's absolutely ridiculous when people get assy about it, yeah they should specify if they don't want it. But what is the point in putting art on a website like this if all people were gonna say was "wow it's so pretty..."???

Artists would never grow and improve.

Yeah if i like an image i'd always say why. and explain that i couldn't find anything to criticise. And i expect people to do the same to me in return.

This is an art website, not a way to get an ego boost by making people say great things about their crap work. Some people need to get out into the real world a bit more.

Good post, Mydian! Ax

I avoid critiques because the artist is usually really good and I can't find flaws or it just their style. The artist should define or state what they want critiques on, it would help commenters.

I agree with you too.....Its really hard to see the obvious flaws in your own work & I love it when people give me honest c + c. Sometimes it does hurt my feelings, but in the long run it was usually sound advise....so I don't think your wrong at all.... ;)

I think some critiques are good, depending on the way you put it. I had someone critiques in a really rude way, and didn’t say why it sucks. But I just ignore those ones. As I know most artists are temper metal about their work. I give my self way to much critique. But the critique that comes from someone else helps sometimes. And I also get worried when there’s no critique being made lol. I really do want to improve my artwork.
It’s alright to critiques my art.

I understand how that goes. I think you're right definitely. I don't mind critique myself, but then honestly I don't think any critique will ever help my work LOL Unfortunately ;P Though, I do think it would be helpful that if someone does say something critical of the piece, they should say something to suggest how to help fix the problem they see. That's something my creative writing teachers always say, if you have something wrong to point out, at least give suggestions to fix it. People tend not to take it as hard if you show you're trying to help. And it's okay to say you don't know how to fix it, you can still suggest to the artist/writer to ask someone else that you think knows how to do it how to help ^^ Though personally too, the reason I usually don't critique anything (unless I am absolutely confused and have to ask a question to clarify), it's because I don't feel like I have any skill to judge how something really should look, b/c I honestly don't know any better lol. Anyway...erm...yeah...that's...uh, my two cents ^^;

I completely understand. I hate simply leaving "oh it's pretty" on a piece....but I'm submissive and have an innate fear of offending a person. When someone asks for critique or when I get to know a person better I still fear offering any critique because I just don't want to hurt anyone's feelings...plus I don't feel as if I'm really some top-notch person who has the best opinion or skill to offer critique.... Yet you're right....if no one points out a lil mistake here or there, then what if the artist does not realize the mistakes they are making? It's so hard really...you don't want to offend, you want to help, but it's like a double-edged sword heh.... I think it helps to get to know a person better or not be shy but who am I to talk? heh.... guess you have to hope for the best in the end huh? ^^;
